I used to live in Sanmartin (Szentmarton), a few kilometers from Oradea (Nagyvarad) and remember the Jewish cemetery that was not maintained at all (there was no one left to do it). During the 70's the local communist mayor allowed the people to desecrate it into a dumping ground for garbage. Once the garbage had no more place, he ordered the whole thing (head stones, rails, etc) buldozed and reclaimed to be part of someone's backyard garden. What a shame that no one ever says anything about the thousand of such desecrated cemeteries around the country. The land of the cemetery is considered holy and according to Jewish tradition, Jewish burial grounds are sacred sites and must remain undisturbed in perpetuity.
